There is a fascinating story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall gaming is illegal. Eight gambling dens are based in a generally tiny area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in an excellent location, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal capital acquired from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is required to be mostly Thai; although, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are for all intents and purposes required to cross, there are ways around this, as is true of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling dens opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary boat gambling hall, features 150 slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga gambling hall is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 one armed bandits and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slots and sixty six of the familiar tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel complex that highlights numerous conveniences accompanying the gambling den, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight tables.
