There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest wagering locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai blue-collar workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, financial sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 0900 to 1700, and though visas are supposedly necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is accurate of most borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 gaming tables. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of chemin de fer, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty slots and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel complex that contains numerous amenities on top of the casino, which houses ten thousand sq.ft. of 130 slots and eighty eight tables.
